Artificial intelligence (AI) systems are transforming our world in many ways, from healthcare to entertainment to education. But how do we align AI systems with diverse human values? How do we ensure that AI systems respect human rights, promote well-being, and uphold accountability?

What are Human Values and How Do They Vary?

Before we can talk about aligning AI systems with human values, we need to understand what human values are and how they vary. Human values are the beliefs, preferences, and principles that guide our actions and decisions. They reflect what we consider important, desirable, and worthwhile in life.

However, human values are not codable. They are dynamic and subjective, evolving and adapting across various situations. They can also differ among cultures, contexts, and individuals. For example, some cultures may value freedom more than security, while others may value security more than freedom. While some people may value tradition more than innovation, while others may value innovation more than tradition.

One way to understand the diversity of human values is to use a framework or typology that classifies them into different types or categories. One such framework is Schwartz’s theory of basic human values (Schwartz, 2012). Schwartz identifies ten types of values: self-direction, stimulation, hedonism, achievement, power, security, conformity, tradition, benevolence, and universalism. These types of values can be further grouped into four higher-order dimensions: openness to change, self-enhancement, conservation, and self-transcendence.

Different types of values can influence how people perceive and interact with AI systems. For example, people valuing openness to change may adopt new AI technologies more readily than those valuing conservation. Those valuing self-enhancement may be more motivated to use AI systems enhancing their status or performance. In contrast, those valuing self-transcendence may not. People valuing universalism may be more concerned about AI systems’ social and environmental impacts than those valuing power.

When aligning AI systems with diverse human values, we must consider the sources and dimensions of human values. These vary across cultures, contexts, and individuals.

How to Align AI Systems with Diverse Human Values

Aligning AI systems with diverse human values is not a simple or straightforward task. It is a complex and multidisciplinary process that requires collaboration and communication among various stakeholders, such as developers, users, regulators, and society at large. It also requires a combination of methods and tools that can help elicit, measure, and incorporate human values into AI design and evaluation.

Value-Sensitive Design

One method that can help align AI systems with diverse human values is value-sensitive design (VSD)3. VSD is an approach that aims to integrate ethical considerations into the design process of technology (Friedman et al., 2017). VSD involves identifying the direct and indirect stakeholders of the technology, analyzing the values that are relevant for them, designing the technology in a way that respects those values, and evaluating the technology in terms of its impacts on those values.

Participatory Design

PD is an approach that involves users and other stakeholders in the co-design of technology (Muller & Kuhn, 1993). It enables users and other stakeholders to express their needs, preferences, and values in relation to the technology, and to influence its design decisions and outcomes. PD can also foster trust and empowerment among users and other stakeholders.

Value Alignment Verification

Value Alignment Verification is a process that aims to efficiently test whether the behavior of an autonomous agent is aligned with a human’s values (Brown, et al. 2021). The goal is to construct a kind of “driver’s test” that a human can give to any agent, which will verify value alignment via a minimal number of queries. This process can be used to evaluate an agent’s performance and correctness in terms of value alignment.

These are some of the methods and tools that can help align AI systems with diverse human values. However, they are not the only ones. There are many other methods and tools that can be used for this purpose, such as ethical principles, value elicitation techniques, value alignment algorithms, or value alignment frameworks. The choice of methods and tools depends on the context and goals of the AI system and its stakeholders.

What are Some of the Practical Tips and Recommendations for Aligning AI Systems with Diverse Human Values?

Aligning AI systems with diverse human values is not a one-time task, but rather an ongoing and iterative process that requires constant monitoring and feedback. Therefore, it is important to follow some practical tips and recommendations that can help ensure that AI systems are aligned with diverse human values throughout their lifecycle, from design to deployment to evaluation.

Here are some of the tips and recommendations that I can offer based on my experience as a mission leader and ethicist, helping people navigate ethical dilemmas:

Involve diverse and representative stakeholders in the design process.

This can help ensure that the AI system reflects the needs, preferences, and values of its users and other stakeholders, and that it does not exclude or harm anyone. It can also help foster trust and acceptance among users and other stakeholders.

This can help monitor how the AI system behaves and affects different dimensions of human values, such as fairness, privacy, safety, or sustainability. It can also help identify any problems or risks that may arise from the AI system’s use or misuse.

Establish transparent and accountable mechanisms for oversight and governance.

This can help ensure that the AI system is subject to ethical standards and regulations, and that it is accountable for any harm or damage it causes. It can also help provide mechanisms for reporting, redress, or remedy for any violations or grievances that may occur from the AI system’s use or misuse.
