What Is Algorethics?

In the following, we will explore the concept of algorethics and how it relates to the ethical and social implications of AI and ML.

Algorethics is a branch of ethics that studies the design, implementation, and use of algorithms. Algorithms are sets of rules or instructions that tell a computer how to perform a specific task. They are the building blocks of AI and ML systems, which can perform complex and intelligent functions such as image recognition, natural language processing, recommendation systems, and much more.

However, algorithms are not neutral or objective. They learn from the values, biases, and assumptions of their creators and users. This can lead to unintended or harmful consequences for individuals, marginalized groups, and society at large. For example, algorithms can be written to unknowingly perpetuate discrimination against vulnerable populations based on their race, gender, age, or other characteristics. They can also affect people’s privacy, security, and autonomy. But most frightening, algorithms can learn to manipulate people’s behavior, preferences, and opinions.

Algorethics is the field of ethics that focuses on the development and deployment of algorithms. It aims to ensure that algorithms are transparent, accountable, and fair. It also strives to involve and empower diverse stakeholders in the algorithmic decision-making process.

By understanding and applying algorethics, we can ensure that AI and ML systems are aligned with human values and respect human dignity and rights. We can also foster trust and confidence in the technology and its benefits for society. This post will discuss some of the key challenges and opportunities of algorethics, as well as some of the best practices and tools for implementing it.

Why is Algorethics Relevant?

Algorethics is a new branch of ethics that focuses on the moral aspects of algorithms and AI systems. The word algorethics is a combination of algorithm and ethics, and it seems to be coined by Paolo Benanti, a professor of moral theology and bioethics at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. According to Benanti, algorethics seek to encode ethical principles into the software so that algorithmic decisions can avoid harmful or undesired consequences.

But why do we need algorethics? Because AI is changing the world in profound ways, affecting every human activity, from medicine to national security. AI systems are not only helping humans, but in some cases, they are creating completely autonomous systems, robots or bots, that can act without human supervision or intervention. This raises a number of ethical challenges and risks, such as:

It may be hard to balance or prioritize these principles or values in a consistent and coherent way.  This is the crux of AI ethics.

How to Implement Algorethics in AI Projects?

In the previous sections, we have defined algorethics as the study of ethical principles and values that guide the design, development and use of AI systems. We have also discussed why algorethics is important for ensuring that AI is beneficial for humanity and society, and does not cause harm or injustice to individuals or groups.

But how can we actually apply algorethics in practice? How can we ensure that our AI projects are aligned with ethical standards and values? How can we identify and address potential ethical risks and challenges that may arise from our AI systems? Here are some practical tips and best practices for implementing algorethics in AI projects

Conducting an ethical impact assessment (EIA) before starting an AI project. 

An EIA is a systematic process of identifying, analyzing and evaluating the potential ethical implications of an AI system, such as its impact on human rights, privacy, fairness, accountability, transparency, etc. An EIA can help us to anticipate and mitigate possible ethical issues, as well as to identify opportunities for enhancing the positive impact of our AI system. An EIA should involve multiple stakeholders, such as developers, users, customers, regulators, experts, etc., and should be updated throughout the project lifecycle.

Involving stakeholders and users in the design process of an AI system. 

Stakeholders and users are those who are affected by or have an interest in an AI system. By engaging them in the design process, we can ensure that our AI system meets their needs and expectations, respects their values and preferences, and incorporates their feedback and suggestions. This can also help us to build trust and acceptance among our stakeholders and users, as well as to foster a sense of co-ownership and co-responsibility for the AI system.

Monitoring and auditing AI systems for ethical issues. 

Monitoring and auditing are processes of checking and verifying the performance and behavior of an AI system against predefined criteria or standards. By monitoring and auditing our AI systems regularly, we can ensure that they are functioning as intended, that they are complying with ethical principles and regulations, that they are not causing any harm or bias to anyone or anything, and that they are responsive to changing circumstances and contexts. Monitoring and auditing should also involve stakeholders and users, as well as independent third parties, such as external auditors or ethics committees.
